Re-Imagining the Work Bag

Hola lovelies,

Being a working woman and pulling it off with style is not an easy task. We work hard at work and even harder at home. Don’t we owe it to ourselves to flaunt our rocking outfit with an equally stunning accessory on our arms? Obviously we do, but I have travelled the depths of the internet in search of a chic bag that is not only smart and sensible in looks but in functionality as well.

Look for laptop work bags and the results are mostly boring (durable but boring!) black backpacks that look like hiking gear. And most of them come with no dedicated pockets or even sufficient ones to hold stuff. The best laptop bag I found was this (http://bit.ly/2bKbvbZ) which has multiple pockets to adhere to our multiple needs. When one looks for designer workbags, we are presented with totes with no laptop sleeve and with a couple of zippered pockets. And seriously how does one travel worry-free with a tote that does not close shut?

Every job in the world demands that we carry multiple electronics on our self. Laptop, iPod, Kindle, a cell phone and their respective chargers. These are items that not only need to be stored separately to avoid being spilled upon but they are also items that are easily tangled and can’t be retrieved easily from one sleeve. And let’s be honest, having a case for each and every item is not only not feasible but a cumbersome solution as well.

And I’ve never seen a bag that addresses so many of the minor issues we face. What about the sunglasses that millions of women wear to work everyday? What about those small keys that are ALWAYS fumbled for? And are you really supposed to re-pack a whole another tote while travelling because we not only need a bag that is light to carry through the airport but also durable to all the bumps it may have to face? It’s been decades since handbags came into existence, but still why do they fail to provide such basic functionalities? This thought baffles me!

As many of you might know, I am a software developer by day and a blogger by night. Being a girl and a developer, I find my bag mostly full with items and even being an organizing freak, I end up fumbling through my things to find the item I want. Does anybody here sympathize with my situation?

So it turns out it’s high time someone re-imagined the work handbag. So, I took up a pencil and started drawing. This redesigning takes into factor all of our electronic needs, be it your smartwatch, iPod, phone, tablet, kindle or portable charger. I’ll be explaining my rationale as I explain the design below.

The Redesigned Work Bag

Work Bag Front and Back View

The bag is rectangle, since I find tapered bags take up more space without allowing it to be used. It is zippered to keep your valuables safe from spilling as well as pick-pockets. The color of the bag is salmon pink/ mint, because it is such a beautiful yet subtle color. The color is muted and the design is also subtle so that your bag does not draw too much unwanted attention. The logo is stowed in the inner linings of the bag so that they do not scream the brand name.

The side away from the body has a hook to hold your sunglasses, so that they are easy to stow away when not needed and still accessible when required. The side closer to the body has two pouches – one flap pouch where you can store your phone (or even pepper spray!) so it is easily accessible and safe. The other is a coin pouch where you can store some money needed for that cab or to buy a chocolate bar for those sudden hunger pangs. There is a big flap throughout the width of the bag that can be used to fit through trolley handles so you can keep the handbag on top of it and zip through the airport without worrying about the handbag slipping off. Smart eh? 😉

Work Bag Side and Top

                   Work Bag Long Handle

The bag is 15.7” x 12” x 2.5” in size. It will fit any laptop/ tablet you may have.  The bag has two zippered pockets – one tech pocket and another pocket. And the bag has a long handle as well for when you want to wear it cross body.

The Bag Pockets

  Work Bag Tech Pocket

The two sides of the tech pocket takes into account almost all of your tech needs. One side is the laptop sleeve where you can fit your laptop of any size. The other side has all the mesh pockets to store your tablet, phone, iPod, earphones, the chargers etc. For me personally, the tablet sleeve would hold my Kindle, the phone sleeve would store my iPhone, the second phone sleeve would hold my portable charger and the last sleeve would store my iPod and earphones pouch. And the mesh pockets in the lower line would hold all my chargers. Separated and untangled.

Work Bag Other Pocket

The other pocket has sleeves for all your other essentials – wallet, water bottle etc. The specific compartments assure that there are no spillages and the bottle and wallet are easily accessible in the bag. I would throw in my medical kit, makeup kit, notebook into the mesh sleeve on the opposite side. This pocket also has slots for pens and two hooks where you can hook in your keys or ID card with the help of a D-ring.

Ah! THIS. This is all of my problems solved in one bag and I will love carrying this beauty to office on a daily basis. Now I just have to find me a manufacturer who would make me this bag and make my life easier. I think this would help working women worldwide as well. So, have you ever faced this dilemma? If so, do you think this re-design would solve your problem in any way? I would love to hear your views on this take of a workbag in the comments below.
