Think about a book? No, not the amazing smell when you get them in the mail and not the amazing feel of holding it in your hands and flipping the pages. Not the surge of love.. Oh God! I have to stop. No. We are talking purely design. Not the design of the book cover but the design of the book. While the design of a book cover is well thought out, majority of the novels are written in the first or third person. Now, take a look at Illuminae.
The book is written in the form of collection of reports, interview extracts, classified documents with some redacted text actually blacked out, diary snippets, search web pages, surveillance footage transcription amongst other documents. The best part is not the unique way the story was presented. It is the minute, minor details on the pages. The logo in the official documents, the coffee mug stains, the ink splatter, the change in font for the various documents, the different patterns in which thoughts are represented and especially, I especially love the thoughts of AI. The story was unique and futuristic I agree and if I read it in the normal story presentation with first person narration in different POVs, I would have given it a 3 on 5 stars (why is it always the parent who deserted you the villain, the audience can live with a third party dark character and a grey lead role as well), but the design blew me off! I gave it 5/5 for the mere innovation in the story presentation.
The book is the usual, two lovestruck teenagers caught between a battle where the female lead who is different, too good to be true and exceptionally amazing in her field (also known as story lines of the Divergent series, The Hunger Games series, the Matched series) and then battle it out against small villains while building up to the battle with the REAL villain of the series. 😛 Let’s move over the story and take a look at the beauty!
I am really looking forward to reading Gemina and mostly because since the documented report had reached it’s end, I am really curious on how the story ahead will be presented!
