Logo and app icon changes are all part of an app or software’s lifecycle. Sometimes, the changes are a welcome breath of air and sometimes take so much flak leaving the app designers to squirm in their seats (read Instagram, Uber). Today, we look at three icon changes that stood out for us this year.
The old Medium icon was a side shot of a 3D “M”. The logo contains various shades of green from dark to light. The logo looked pretty chic and stood out in our App drawer. The new icon now still has an M but written in old-school newspaper style with the first letter larger than the others. The icon is also now black and white emphasizing the newspaper like the feel of the icon.
Verdict Nope! The design looks like it took a turn for the worse.
The Kindle app is a great app to continue reading when on the go or when the lights are out. When the icon changed sometime back, we were taken aback. The old Kindle icon had a boy under the tree reading, with Kindle in mustard yellow over the tree. The sky behind was a washed out indigo color. In the new logo, the boy remains but the tree has vanished. The sky has turned to include various shades of blue and also incorporates white stars. The curves are much more realistic and so better than the earlier icon, which was a tad eyesore.
Verdict Loved the change.
We have talked at length about the YouTube design overhaul here, where we touched upon the logo change as well. The old YouTube icon had a red box behind the tube to mimic the original tube aka TV. The new logo instead corporates the YouTube app icon followed by a simple YouTube written.
Verdict Umm. we love the fresh new look and incorporation of the app logo, but the decreased letter spacing and the font are not faring well with us.
Well, that were the three major icon changes and clearly, we are everywhere with our emotions. Have you noticed any other icon changes in 2017 that you loved or hated? Let us know in the comments below. Comment. share and don’t forget to spread the love!
